1 small onion, chopped
2 tsp. oil
2 (8 oz each) pkg tempeh, grated
2 tsp. chili powder
½ tsp. garlic powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
2 c. water
whole wheat buns or baked potatoes, for serving


  1. Saute onion in oil in a large frying pan over medium heat for 2 minutes.
  2. Add tempeh and stir-fry for 5 minutes longer.
  3. Reduce heat. Add chili powder, garlic powder, salt, tomato paste and water.
  4. Simmer for 5 more minutes.
  5. Serve warm, on whole-wheat buns or on top of baked potatoes.
