Description

The one thing they have in common is that they're both undeniably delicious. But there's a few things that set these frozen treats apart.

  1. Take the Ingredients, for Starters

    Eggs in a Bowl

Ice cream and gelato both contain cream, milk, and sugar. However, ice cream usually contains eggs and more cream than milk.

  2. Fat Content

    Scooped Ice Cream

By definition, ice cream must contain at least 10 percent milk fat, with premium versions containing more. Gelato, on the other hand, has roughly 4 to 9 percent fat.

  3. Churn, Baby, Churn

Both gelato and ice cream are churned to get their creamy, smooth consistency. But ice cream is churned at a higher speed to help incorporate air. Gelato, being slowly churned, yields a thicker texture.

  4. So Cool It's Hot

Ice cream is typically served at about 7 to 12 degrees, while gelato is served from 10 to 15 degrees. Although this doesn't seem like a major difference, the warmer texture allows the gelato to be served at a soft and supple consistency. It's also believed that because gelato is served at a warmer temperature, it doesn’t numb the mouth, which allows for more vibrant flavors.

  5. The Final Scoop

Gelato is traditionally served with a flat spade. The spade is known to soften the gelato before serving, resulting in a soft, creamy texture. Ice cream, on the other hand, is scooped out with a good ole fashioned ice cream scoop. Make ours a double!
