    Serves 30
    ⅓ c. shortening
    1 c. lightly packed brown sugar
    2 eggs
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 ¼ c. all-purpose flour
    1 c. ground flax seed
    1 tsp. baking soda
    ½ tsp. salt
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    ¼ tsp. ground cloves
    ½ tsp. nutmeg
    ½ c. oatmeal
    1 c. raisins
    ½ c. chopped citron peel or candied fruit
    ½ c. chopped pecans


    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. In a bowl, beat together shortening, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla.
    3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, ground flax, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Gradually stir flour mixture into liquid mixture.
    4. Stir in oatmeal, raisins, citron or candied fruit and pecans. Mix until combined.
    5. Form into 1-inch balls. Place on a greased cookie sheet, leaving 2 inches between cookies.
    6. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
    7. Remove cookies from baking sheet and cool on wire rack.
