Hy-Vee Partners with the NAACP to Host Community Vaccination Clinic Oct. 23

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Oct. 18, 2021) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announces today that in partnership with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and in support of VAXDSM, it will host a COVID-19 and flu vaccination clinic at Franklin Junior High School in Des Moines. The vaccination clinic will be available by appointment from 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Oct. 23. 

In addition to flu shots, free first, second, booster and third doses of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine will be available at the clinic. First and second doses of Pfizer-BioNTech are currently authorized for individuals ages 12+ at least 21 days apart. The Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose is currently only authorized for the following Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine recipients at least 6 months after their second dose:
•    Long-term care facility residents
•    Individuals ages 65+
•    Individuals ages 18+ with underlying medical conditions (as outlined by the CDC)
•    Individuals ages 18-64 who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting
The third Pfizer-BioNTech dose is currently only authorized for moderately to severely immunocompromised individuals (as outlined by the CDC) ages 12+ at least 28 days after their second dose. 

It is strongly recommended individuals receive the same vaccine manufacturer as their previous dose(s). Individuals who previously received either a Moderna or Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine may NOT receive a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. 

According to the CDC, individuals can receive their flu shot at the time of their COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals can schedule their vaccination appointment(s) at the following links:

Individuals who receive a COVID-19 vaccine at the clinic can receive any additional vaccine doses at their local Hy-Vee Pharmacy. Minors must have parental/guardian consent to receive the vaccine. 

It is recommended that vaccine recipients bring the following to their vaccination: 
•    Insurance card* (if they have insurance) and Medicare Part B red, white and blue card (if Medicare recipient)
•    Photo ID (recommended)
•    COVID-19 vaccination record card (if applicable)
•    A mask to wear

*If individuals do not have insurance, they can still be vaccinated. 
**NOTE: Individuals receiving a COVID-19 booster or third dose will need to self-attest to their eligibility. Individuals will NOT be required to show documentation to prove eligibility.

VaxDSM is a local collaborative effort designed to lift awareness and acceptance of the value of vaccination against COVID-19 among Black, Latino, African, Asian-American, and other underserved populations within the Des Moines metropolitan area. VaxDSM’s goal is to inform and engage these communities to receive a vaccination and achieve an overall average vaccination rate of 70 percent or more—ultimately to decrease illness and death related to the pandemic. The strategy is to utilize trusted voices within the community, initially beginning with pastors and spiritual leaders, to combat disinformation, myths and untruths that may exist around the vaccination effort.
