July 16, 2020 | News & Press Releases

CHEROKEE, Iowa (July 16, 2020) — Hy-Vee, Inc. announces today that Mike Drefke, a driver from the Cherokee Distribution Center, has become Cherokee’s eighth driver to reach the 2 million mile mark for miles driven without a preventable accident.

Drefke reached the milestone late Wednesday evening as he left the Cherokee Distribution Center with 439 miles to go until the 2 million mile mark. Drefke reached the milestone on his return home, after a route to Albert Lea, Minnesota, that included a stop at Perishable Distributors of Iowa (PDI) in Ankeny. When he returned to the Cherokee Distribution Center, Drefke was met by his family and fellow employees, where his accomplishment was celebrated.

Drefke has been a Hy-Vee employee since September 2001 when he began working as a part-time driver for the distribution center. In September 2003, he moved to full-time status.

Drefke has been a member of the Hy-Vee Road of Gold Hall of Fame since April 2013, when he became Cherokee’s 19th driver to reach 1 million miles driven without a preventable accident. The Hy-Vee Road of Gold program honors drivers who have achieved safe miles driven milestones with an annual banquet, a variety of gifts and a personalized gold- (1 million mile safe driver) or black- (2 million mile safe driver) painted Hy-Vee tractor to drive for five years.
