Clay Elementary School Completes More Than 2.4 Million Squats to Win Hy-Vee KidsFit Challenge

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (March 22, 2021) — Clay Elementary students in Altoona have out-squatted everyone in the Midwest. Today, the school and its students were announced as a top-three finisher in the Hy-Vee KidsFit February Squat Challenge. 

Hy-Vee has worked throughout the pandemic to support kids and families with fun activities that can be done at home and at school through its Hy-Vee KidsFit program, which promotes health and nutrition through special events and partnerships. In February, the Hy-Vee KidsFit team partnered with 251 classrooms across the grocer’s eight-state region to encourage kids to compete in a squat challenge and learn about the importance of exercise. The students at Clay Elementary ended up completing a total of 2,462,914 squats. 

“There are so many unique challenges in helping kids stay active right now, which is why the Hy-Vee KidsFit team wanted to provide a fun way for students to get in some exercise while learning about health and wellness,” said Daira Driftmier, Hy-Vee KidsFit director.

The top 25 classrooms to participate in the Squat Challenge will receive Hy-Vee KidsFit All-Star T-shirts and their entire school will receive dietitian-approved snacks from Kraft and MadeGood along with a mini first-aid kit from Johnson & Johnson. In addition to these prizes, the top three classes will also receive a hallway movement kit for their entire school to help students continue to stay active in the future.
