FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MADISON – Madison, WI, welcomed a second Hy-Vee store on May 14 – an 80,000 square-foot building located on 675 S. Whitney Way. The newest location becomes the second Hy-Vee store to be built in Wisconsin.

Madison No. 2 -- which includes a pharmacy, bakery, full service restaurant and bar, complete with sushi kitchen -- will create over 500 new jobs in the community along with its initial investment of over $17 million.

The new Madison site is just the third Hy-Vee store to offer a sit-down restaurant and second to house a café. Madison No. 2 also presents an Italian kitchen that has a wood fire pizza oven, a sandwich shop and Asian cuisine kitchen, as well as a fully stocked liquor store that features over 1100 wines and nearly 1400 different beer selections.

The newest Hy-Vee store also contains an upstairs club room, which will house cooking classes put on by the store’s esteemed bakers and chefs, and other culinary events. There will also be an on-site dietician along with a Starbucks coffee shop, a full-service butcher, floral department, and a cake decorator.

“Everyone asked me today, ‘Why Wisconsin? Why Madison?’” Hy-Vee CEO Randy Edeker said to more than 500 employees at the new store’s pre-opening ceremony on May 13. “It’s because we do phenomenal here.”

Hy-Vee’s first Wisconsin location opened in 2009 on East Washington Ave. It received so much traffic from customers that the city of Madison was able to accommodate a second store on the west side of town. There is a third Wisconsin location in the works at Orchard Pointe in Fitchburg, scheduled to open during the fall of this year.

Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating 233 retail stores in eight Midwestern states. For 2012 the company recorded total sales of $7.7 billion, ranking it among the top 25 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the United States.
