Plans to Build a Hy-Vee Store In Jefferson

WEST DES MOINES, IA – Officials with Hy-Vee, Inc. today announced plans to build a Hy-Vee store in Jefferson.

If Hy-Vee’s plans are approved by the city, the 32,000-square foot supermarket will be built at the intersection of North Vine and Adams, just north of the downtown business district. It will replace the current Hy-Vee Drugstore in Jefferson.

“We appreciate the tremendous support customers have shown for our Jefferson store,” said Jen Kopriva, assistant vice president of Hy-Vee’s North Central District. “Many of them have asked us to consider locating a supermarket in the community. Now that we have found the right site, we’re excited to move ahead.”

Hy-Vee has submitted an application to the city to begin the process of rezoning the proposed North Vine site. Pending rezoning and other necessary approvals, construction of the store could begin as early as this fall, with an opening in 2014.

The new Jefferson Hy-Vee will be a full-service supermarket, offering a large selection of fresh produce, meat, dairy, frozen foods and grocery items. A HealthMarket department will showcase natural and organic products and foods for special dietary needs. The store will feature a bakery and kitchen with fresh prepared foods available for dining in or carrying out. The pharmacy department from the Hy-Vee Drugstore, along with the store’s employees, will transfer to the new Hy-Vee store.

Kopriva said the proposed Jefferson Hy-Vee represents an investment of $5-6 million in the local economy and will create about 140 new full- and part-time jobs. “We’re always proud to be able to reinvest in the communities that have helped make our company successful,” she said. “This project will be good for Hy-Vee, and good for Jefferson.”
