Kara Hoerr

Kara Hoerr is a registered, certified dietitian who is passionate about helping others lead a healthy, active lifestyle. Kara graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics and her Master of Science degree in nutritional science from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She completed her dietetic internship at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois. Kara is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) and the Wisconsin Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It is Kara’s goal to help you, the customer, meet your nutritional needs through a variety of services that fit your needs and goals. She will provide you with evidence-based nutritional information and practical advice to help you prevent or manage a variety of health conditions or chronic diseases, including weight management, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and food allergies and intolerances.

Personalized Shopping Assistance & General Nutrition Advice
Walk-in or by appointment – no fee
Do you have nutrition recommendations from your doctor or the dietitian you saw in the clinic? Maybe you read about a new diet and have questions, or saw a food promoted on Dr. Oz and are curious about it. Stop in and talk with Kara, your Fitchburg Hy-Vee dietitian, to put this information into action! Kara is available for personalized shopping assistance, to answer your nutrition questions, or to ask for her advice on a particular food or recipe.

Group Store Tours
By appointment – no fee
Pick the theme or topic, schedule a date and time, and bring your group. Kara will provide a general tour throughout the store, or advise you on foods to fit your group’s needs. Kara often meets with classrooms learning about food and nutrition, community groups and Scout troops. Each tour can be customized, along with Q & A along the way. Most tours last one hour. Sampling encouraged!

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Education and Counseling
By appointment – $125/hour
Kara will help you develop a nutrition plan for your specific health needs such as weight loss/gain, diabetes management, high cholesterol, food allergy/intolerance or other special dietary needs. Individual consultations are a great way to get personalized advice about nutrition. Kara will perform a complete nutrition assessment and will use this information to help you assess your current needs and develop appropriate goals, related to a specific disease state or health condition. Initial appointments are typically one hour, follow-up visits usually 30-45 minutes. Individual shopping assistance generally accompanies counseling visits, at no additional fee.

Healthy Weight Package
By appointment - $100/5 sessions
This series of visits is for the customer interested in accountability to help achieve healthy weight loss, maintenance or gain. This package includes an initial measurement of body fat percentage with weight measurements at each visit. The one-on-one visits with Kara will be focused on your metabolism and individual needs, while including assistance with meal planning and grocery shopping. Kara will help you balance calorie and nutrient awareness while honoring your hunger and fullness cues. This series includes 5 sessions.

Community Nutrition Programs
On-site or in our Meeting Room – fees vary (based on location, time and services included)
Classroom and other community-based presentations are informative, interactive, and tailored to your needs. Kara will come to your organization, church or school to present a nutrition class designed around your desired nutrition topic. Presentations include a nutrition presentation, take-home handouts, recipes and food samples.

Worksite Wellness Programs
On-site or in our Meeting Room - fees vary (based on location, time and services included)
Include Kara in your next worksite wellness program or employee nutrition event! She will come to your place of business, or you can bring your employees to the store for a wellness retreat. Kara will present nutrition information in a way that will empower your employees to make positive lifestyle changes. Several topics to choose from are available, as well as customized options to fit your group’s needs. Biometric screening options also available, including cholesterol, blood sugar, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. Handouts, resources and samples are typically included with presentations and events.

Begin Program
Group or individual – fees vary
Begin is a 10-week lifestyle management program led by your Hy-Vee dietitian, Kara. This program can be individualized or presented in a group setting and focuses on eight key goals to help you improve your weight, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. This program also includes two cholesterol screenings, at the beginning and end of the program, to track progress. To begin your new lifestyle, contact Kara to set up your appointments or watch for announcements on program times and dates.

Begin 4 Kids
By appointment – $90/session (individual) ($99/4-session for group)
Begin 4 Kids is a 4-week lifestyle management program with an emphasis on food groups, activity and eating for good health. Each session is led by Kara who will help your child get onto the road to a healthy lifestyle in a fun and interactive way!

Biometric Health Screening
By appointment – $45
Health prevention is key to living well and a biometric assessment by your Hy-Vee dietitian, Kara, will help you stay on top of your health. In less than 15 minutes, you can have your cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage identified. This is all completed in our consultation room next to the Pharmacy. Kara or a pharmacist will review all of your numbers for you, and provide you with guidance in moving forward.

Events & Cooking Classes
In-store – fees vary
Check out our Calendar of Events on-line at Select Fitchburg as your store, and click on Calendar of Events. We often hold kids and adult cooking classes, health events, and nutrition-related classes. A full description of the event or class is provided by clicking on the calendar event. On-line registration is available for the classes or events that require it. Payment for classes is taken at Customer Service.

Meal Solutions
Online and in-store – no fee
For online resources, start by visiting Click on the Meal Solutions tab near the top of the screen. From there you will find an extensive recipe database, meal ideas and information on special diets (gluten-free, low-sodium, diabetes and heart-healthy). You can also register for weekly health and wellness information, recipes and meal plans to be sent to your email, by setting up an account in a few short steps. With an established account, you have the option to set up a recipe box to save the ones you’d like to try. If you would like assistance using these online resources, contact Kara. She can also print out recipes or meal plans for you, if you do not have access to a computer. Kara also has recipes cards and nutrition education brochures available in-store; check out the Dietitian kiosk located in the HealthMarket.
