Chef Ted Smalley has always had a passion for cooking and good food. His professional food experience started when he managed restaurants throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas metroplex. He worked in full-service, gourmet burgers, and corporate pizza settings. While working in the full-service restaurant, he was allowed free range for recipe research and development.

Chef Ted received his Associate's of Applied Science from Kirkwood Community College’s Culinary Arts program in December, 2010. He continued on to receive his Associate's of Applied Science in restaurant management in May, 2011. While at Kirkwood, Chef Ted also participated in the International Culinary Studies program in Japan.

Chef Ted became executive chef at an upscale catering company based in Iowa City. He prepared and served meals for clients ranging from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics doctors, Iowa Hawkeye sports teams and deans of U of I Colleges, to the Governor. He also was honored to be a part of the 2012 MDA Celebrity Chef Auction at the University of Iowa. The company relocated and Chef Ted continued catering on his own, doing in-home cooking lessons, band catering and on-site video production catering.

Chef Ted hopes to develop cooking classes for adults and children and conduct them at the Charles City Hy-Vee. He also has three product lines in the works and is writing two cookbooks.

Chef Ted’s motto is “To make ordinary food extraordinary." He is available to answer any of your cooking and culinary questions. Chef Ted can help you create dishes for your family and guests that will rival any upscale restaurant.
