1 tbsp. cocoa
1 ½ tsp. salt, divided
2 ½ c. sugar, divided
2 ¼ c. flour, divided
1 ½ c. Crisco shortening, divided
1 oz. red food coloring
2 tsp. vanilla extract, divided
1 c. buttermilk, divided
2 large eggs
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. milk


  1. Stir together cocoa, 1 teaspoon salt, 1-1/2 cups sugar and 2 cups flour. Add 1/2 cup shortening, red food coloring, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2/3 cup buttermilk. Beat on high speed until smooth.
  2. Add eggs and 1/3 cup buttermilk. Beat on high speed until smooth.
  3. Mix baking soda with vinegar. Stir into batter by hand.
  4. Pour into greased 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
  5. To make frosting, combine milk, 1/4 cup flour and 1/2 teaspoon salt in saucepan; cook until thickened. Cool. Beat 1 cup shortening, 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla at high speed until fluffy. Add the cooked mixture to the shortening mixture and beat again.
