    Servings and Ingredients

    Ingredients
    Serves 14
    QuantityIngredientAdd
14 to 16 medium apples, scrubbed to remove any wax
14 to 16 wooden skewers, chop sticks, or popsicle sticks
4 c. assorted toppings (crushed cookies, candies, nuts)
    1 c. Hy-Vee salted butter
    2 ¼ c. packed Hy-Vee light brown sugar
1 (14 oz) can Hy-Vee sweetened condensed milk
    1 c. light corn syrup
    1 tsp. Hy-Vee vanilla

    Directions

    1. Prepare apple-dipping area with sheets of parchment paper sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Skewer apples with wooden sticks and set aside. Place assorted topping in shallow dishes near dipping station.
    2. Meanwhile, melt butter over low heat in a medium saucepan.
    3. Add brown sugar, sweetened condensed milk and light corn syrup. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a boil, stirring well.
    4. Once at a boil, clip candy thermometer to pan and reduce heat to medium. Continue boiling at a moderate, steady rate, stirring frequently, until it reaches firm-ball stage, 248 degrees (about 13 to 18 minutes).
    5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Promptly transfer caramel to warm slow cooker or work quickly from the saucepan. Dip each apple into the caramel at an angle, turning slowly to allow for caramel to set slightly. Allow excess caramel to drip off and gently scrape off excess caramel from bottom of apple with a spatula. Then roll apples in desired toppings and set on parchment paper to cool.
