    ½ c. shortening
    ¼ c. brown sugar
    1 large egg, separated
    ½ tsp. vanilla
    1 c. flour
    ¼ tsp. salt
    ¾ c. finely chopped nuts
    frosting, preserves or jelly

    Directions

    1. Beat together shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Stir in flour and salt. Using 1 teaspoon of dough, roll into balls.
    2. Beat egg white with a fork. Dip balls in egg white and roll in nuts.
    3. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Press thumb in center of each ball.
    4. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
    5. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool.
    6. Place frosting, preserves or jelly in center of each cookie.
