    Most people fry the round coin-shaped pickles, but we're not most people. When it comes to the perfect fried pickle recipe, we're all about the spear.

    Hy-Vee vegetable oil, or canola oil for frying
    ½ c. Hy-Vee plain bread crumbs
    2 tsp. Hy-Vee ranch dressing mix
    10 Hy-Vee kosher dill pickle spears, drained
    Hy-Vee all-purpose flour, for coating
    1 Hy-Vee large egg, lightly beaten
    Desired dipping sauces

    • Saucepan or deep-fryer
    • Paper towels
    • 2 medium bowls

    Directions

    1. Heat oil in a heavy saucepan or deep-fryer to 350 degrees. Follow instructions for quantity of oil for deep fryer. For heavy saucepan, allow at least 2-inches of oil. Line a baking sheet with paper towels; set aside.

    2. Combine bread crumbs and ranch dressing mix in a medium bowl. Place egg in another medium bowl. Pat pickle spears dry with paper towels and coat with flour.

    3. Dip pickle spears into egg and then into bread crumb mixture. Fry in small batches for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels; keep warm.
