    Description

    A “smash” cocktail is defined as muddling or extracting all of the flavors and oils from a whole fruit (skins, cores, and all). Jeff’s version takes out sweetness of a traditional smash cocktail, and makes a sour and warming version of a classic smash.

    2 pt. fresh blackberries
    ½ c. Hy-Vee granulated sugar
    ½ lime, juiced
    ½ lemon, cut into wedges
    5 fresh mint leaves
    1 oz. simple syrup
    2 oz. bourbon whiskey
    Lemon peel, for garnish
    Fresh blackberry, for garnish

    Directions

    1. Add blackberries, sugar, and lime juice into a blender; blend until smooth. If desired, strain mixture through a fine-mesh strainer.

    2. Add lemon, mint leaves, simple syrup, and 1-oz. blackberry puree, and whiskey to a cocktail shaker. Using a muddler, muddle ingredients together to combine. Add ice to cocktail shaker; shake until well combined and chilled.

    3. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with ice. Garnish with a fresh lemon peel and blackberry, if desired.
