Pro tip: Open the pumpkin from the bottom rather than the top to remove the seeds and guts. This gives you a larger surface for decorating and keeps the stem intact for display.
Use a stencil to trace your design. Pay attention to the white space and shaded areas of the stencil. The shaded space (called negative space) is where you'll gently scrape away the top layer of the pumpkin skin. Look for Halloween design stencils and pumpkin carving tools at Hy-Vee.
Using a sharp tool, such as a pumpkin carving tool, mat knife, or clay-carving tool, remove the skin of the negative areas.
Now for the really fun part. Place LED Pumpkin Tea Lights inside your pumpkin and let your design glow. You made need as many as four lights per pumpkin.
