Programs: Sprouts – Get Out and Grow
Youth gardens can grow more than plants. They can grow healthy kids and plant seeds for healthy habits that will last a lifetime! The “Sprouts Get Out and Grow” program has been developed to promote healthier lifestyles in school-aged children. During the months of June, July and August, classes are held in an outdoor garden classroom at the Winona Hy-Vee that focuses on one target vegetable each week.
Our summer sessions include:
• Gardening with a focus on fruits and vegetable and the health benefits they offer.
• Making healthy choices fun through cooking and educational activities kids will enjoy.
• Fostering family connections with garden-fresh produce sent home with a recipe and a goal of cooking a healthy recipe in the kitchen together as a family.
The main goals of the program are:
• Children making healthier choices through increased fruit and vegetable intake.
• Teaching the connection of fresh food and good health.
• Teaching preparation of healthier meals.
• Reinforcing positive perceptions of healthy foods.
