WEST DES MOINES, IA – Officials with Hy-Vee, Inc. have announced plans to build a supermarket in Springfield, MO.
Hy-Vee has an option to purchase land at the intersection of Battlefield Road and Kansas Expressway in this southwest Missouri community known as the “Queen City of the Ozarks.” With a population in excess of 150,000, Springfield is Missouri’s third-largest city and serves as the hub of a growing five-county metropolitan area with a population nearing half a million.
Hy-Vee received approval from the city to have the proposed site designated as a Community Improvement District, which will allow for infrastructure improvements in the area. Hy-Vee plans to invest nearly $1 million in road upgrades and a new traffic signal at the site.
Pending final approval from the city, Hy-Vee plans to begin construction later this year on an 85,000-square-foot supermarket and adjacent convenience store. The new store will create 350 to 400 jobs and represent a total project investment of approximately $17 million in the Springfield economy.
Hy-Vee, Inc. is an employee-owned corporation operating 229 retail stores in eight Midwestern states. For 2009 the company recorded total sales of $6.4 billion, ranking it among the top 30 supermarket chains and the top 50 private companies in the United States.
