More Than A Pharmacy

Filling more than prescriptions

MASON CITY —Some pharmacies are doing more these days than filling prescriptions and counseling customers about medications.

Hy-Vee Drugstore, Mason City, is one of these pharmacies.

Pharmacist Sarah Arickx said counseling customers about new medications and over-the-counter medications still makes up the majority of their work, but they also give vaccinations, sell medical equipment and do laboratory work.

“There’s just a need for it in the community,” Arickx said.

Selling medical equipment has been around for many years but the other two services are relatively new.

Giving vaccinations started about two years ago when a program became available for pharmacists to do so, Arickx said. Prior to that a nurse had to come in and give them.

Now Hy-Vee Drugstore gives three types of vaccinations — influenza, pneumonia and Zostavax (shingles).

Arickx said it has been giving the influenza and shingles vaccinations for about two years and the pneumonia vaccine about a year. “We give tons of them,” she said.

The shingles vaccination is given every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.
