4 c. Granny Smith apples, sliced
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
4 ¼ tsp. salt, divided
2 tbsp. butter
cinnamon, to taste
2 c. Gold Medal flour
¾ c. vegetable shortening
9 tbsp. cold water
sugar and cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Combine apples, sugar, cornstarch, 4 teaspoons salt, butter and cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. Combine flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and shortening. Blend together. Add water. Divide dough in half. Roll out on a floured board. Fit half of dough into a 9-inch pie pan.
  4. Add apple filling. Cover with second half of rolled-out dough. Flute edges and make vent holes in top of crust. Sprinkle lightly with sugar on top and a touch of cinnamon.
  5. Bake for 1 hour.
