Q: What is the difference between the different types of COVID-19 tests?
A: There are two main types of tests: diagnostic tests (also known as viral tests) and antibody tests.

A diagnostic test can show if a patient is currently infected with COVID-19. The rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test and the lab test (molecular PCR) are diagnostic tests. These tests are designed to detect the presence of the virus that causes COVID-19, but look for different parts of the virus. Rapid antigen tests provide fast results and are very accurate for positive results (a negative result may need further confirmation). Rapid PCR and the lab test (molecular PCR) are the most sensitive and accurate type of test.
  • A diagnostic test does not show if you have ever had the COVID-19 virus in the past.
An antibody test can show whether a patient was infected with the COVID-19 virus in the past. Antibodies are proteins your body makes to fight infections. The rapid antibody test will help assess if patients have antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19.
  • An antibody test does not show if a patient has a current infection, because it can take 1-3 weeks after infection to make antibodies. The rapid antibody test cannot be used to diagnose current infection. To test for current infection, it is recommended that patients take either the rapid antigen test or the lab test (molecular PCR).

Q: Which type of antibodies does the rapid antibody test detect?
A: The rapid antibody test can detect and differentiate between IgM and IgG antibodies.
IgM antibodies are usually the first antibodies produced by the body after a virus attack. A positive IgM test indicates that you may have been infected and that your immune system has started to respond to the virus.
IgG antibodies develop in most patients within 2-3 weeks after symptoms of COVID-19 begin. The IgG antibodies remain in the blood after an infection has passed. It is unknown at this time how much protection antibodies might provide against reinfection.
Q: How much does each test cost?
A: Prices vary for the rapid PCR test and rapid antigen test, which are payable by credit or debit card only. Patients will pay for their test once arriving to the Hy-Vee Pharmacy testing location. Learn more about testing costs for the rapid PCR. and rapid antigen test.
At this time, there is no cost to patients for the lab test (molecular PCR).
The rapid antibody test costs $25 and may be purchased with any form of payment, including health savings accounts (HSA) and flexible spending accounts (FSA). Patients will pay for their test upon arrival at the Hy-Vee Pharmacy testing location. Learn more about testing costs for the rapid antibody test.
Q: Is the rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test and/or the rapid antibody test covered by insurance?
A: At this time, the rapid PCR and rapid antigen tests may only be purchased by credit or debit card. Upon test completion, patients will receive a receipt from Hy-Vee that they can submit to their insurer. Patients should check with their insurer before scheduling a test to confirm coverage.

Q: When will I receive my test results?
A: An email notification will be sent to patients when their test results are available.
Patients who complete the rapid PCR test will receive their test results the same day in as few as 30 minutes (up to 1 day). An email notification will be sent to patients when results are available. Patients can log in to view and print their lab report.
Patients who complete the rapid antigen test will receive their test results the same day in as few as 1-2 hours. An email notification will be sent to patients when results are available. Patients can log in to view and print their lab report.
Patients who complete the lab test (molecular PCR) should receive their test results within 3-5 business days. An email notification from eTrueNorth will be sent to patients when results are available. Patients can log in to view and print their lab report.
Patients who complete the rapid antibody test will receive their test results in as few as 15 minutes. Patients can log in to view and print their lab report. Patients can also wait for their results at the Hy-Vee Pharmacy if they wish to discuss their test results with a Hy-Vee Pharmacy team member.
Q: I don't drive. Can I walk up for a COVID-19 test?
A: Patients receiving the rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test or lab test (molecular PCR) are required to arrive in a vehicle with the windows rolled up and are not permitted to exit the vehicle or enter the testing location at any time.
Patients who are receiving the rapid antibody test are allowed to enter the testing location.
All patients must register ahead of time in order to be tested. No walk-ins will be accepted at this time.
Q: I don't have any COVID-19 symptoms; can I still get tested?
A: Even if patients are not currently showing signs of symptoms, they may still be eligible for testing. To see if you qualify for testing, you must register online and complete the screening and enrollment process. To test for current COVID-19 infection, register for a rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test or a lab test (molecular PCR).
NOTE: According to clarifying guidance issued by the CDC on Dec. 5, 2020, only the following patients will be eligible for rapid antigen testing:
  • Patients who are symptomatic
  • Patients who are asymptomatic with a known or reported exposure in the last 14 days

* Any patient who is asymptomatic and has not had a known exposure in the last 14 days will not be eligible for rapid antigen testing.
The rapid antibody test is available for patients who wish to learn if they have been infected with COVID-19 in the past and are not currently experiencing symptoms.
Q: How old do you have to be to get tested for COVID-19?
A: Age requirements vary by test:
  • Rapid PCR test: Available to ages 5+
  • Rapid antigen test: Approved for ages 6+
  • Lab test (molecular PCR): Approved for ages 3+
  • Rapid antibody test: Approved for ages 6+
Minors must be accompanied to the testing appointment by their parent or legal guardian. Additionally, all patients must meet the screening and enrollment criteria in order to be tested at a Hy-Vee Pharmacy location. Learn more about the testing criteria for the rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test, lab test (molecular PCR), and rapid antibody test.
Q: What does it mean if I receive a positive test result from the rapid antibody test?
A: A positive test result means antibodies from an infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 may have been detected in the test sample. This could mean that a patient has recently or previously had COVID-19.
There is a chance that the rapid antibody test can report a positive result that is wrong (false positive). No test is 100% accurate all of the time. It is possible for a false positive to occur if patients have antibodies from an infection with a different virus. Patients should contact their local health care provider to determine the likelihood of a false result.
Regardless of their test result, patients should continue to follow CDC guidelines to reduce the risk of infection, including social distancing and wearing masks.
Q: I tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies. Does this mean I am immune to the virus?
A: No, a positive antibody test result does not mean a patient is immune to COVID-19. At this time, it is unknown how long antibodies remain present in the body following infection. It is also unknown if the presence of antibodies protects patients from getting infected again or helps reduce the severity or duration of a future COVID-19 infection. Additionally, antibody test results do not confirm whether a patient is able to spread the virus. Regardless of their test result, patients should continue to follow CDC guidelines to reduce the risk of infection, including social distancing and wearing masks.
Q: Which Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations offer COVID-19 testing?
A: Find the list of participating Hy-Vee locations offering the rapid PCR test, rapid antigen test, lab test (molecular PCR), and rapid antibody test.
