Our Recommendation

Top Care Omeprazole (generic Prilosec)

How Can It Help?

Omeprazole is used to treat frequent heartburn (chest pain, burning sensation in the chest, acidic taste in the mouth) that occurs two or more days a week. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is also used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

How Should I Use It?

For self-treatment of heartburn, take one capsule every day for up to 14 days. Take 30 to 60 minutes before eating, preferably before breakfast.

Important ConsiderationsTopCare Omeprazole

  • If heartburn persists for more than 14 days or comes back within four months, consult with a doctor before taking again. A medical evaluation may be needed to determine if there is a more serious condition.
  • This is not an as-needed medication for those experiencing rare or food-specific heartburn; there are other medications that work better as they provide immediate relief.
  • Do not take more than one capsule a day unless directed by a doctor. It is not intended for immediate relief of heartburn because it may take one–four days to see the full effect.
  • Common side effects include diarrhea, constipation and headache.
  • Do not use and contact your doctor immediately if you have heartburn with lightheadedness, sweating, dizziness or chest pain. Do not use if you have trouble or pain swallowing food, vomiting with blood, or bloody or black stools.
  • Ask your pharmacist before using if taking warfarin or other blood-thinning medications, prescription antifungal or anti-yeast medications, tacrolimus, mycophenolate, prescription antiretroviral for HIV, or methotrexate.

Reduce Food Waste

Leftovers are a great way to use foods in your fridge that otherwise would go to waste. Try to plan one meal per week that involves leftovers.
