Our Recommendation
Looking for a product to better your heart health? Have you been told that you have high cholesterol or triglycerides? Why not try your Hy-Vee pharmacist’s pick of the month to help increase your overall health!
How Can It Help Me?
Fish oil contains long chain fatty acids, EPA, and DHA that are also found in seafood and said to lower triglyceride levels. This can lead to lower levels of “bad” cholesterol in your body. There are other uses for fish oil also, but studies have shown lower rates of heart disease associated with the use of fish oil or consuming large amounts of seafood.
How Should I Use It?
An appropriate dose of fish oil is 4 grams per day all at once or divided into two doses. If stomach upset occurs, taking with food may help. Swallow whole and do not crush, break, or chew.
Important Considerations
- The most common side effects include stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting especially at high doses.
- Let your prescriber know before starting fish oil if already taking a blood thinner, such as warfarin.
- Use with caution in patients with an allergy or sensitivity to fish or shellfish
- Should be used along with diet therapy and exercise
