Weight-management specialists are betting on preliminary research showing that hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a compound extracted from the rind of the fruit, may help promote fat loss.

While we wait for more research, keep in mind what we have learned so far:

1. The promise of HCA is based on animal studies that suggest it inhibits fat synthesis and perhaps suppresses appetite.

2. Dieters often take 500 mg of HCA three times per day (before each meal), though this amount is far below the levels used in animal research (figured on a per-pound body weight basis).

3. The effect of HCA is enhanced when used in conjunction with a low-fat diet, because HCA does nothing to reduce the caloric effects of dietary fat.
