Hy-Vee's Best Cake and Floral Designers Compete in Extreme Challenge Finals

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Nov. 8, 2018) — Hy-Vee, Inc.’s most creative cake and floral designers from across the company’s eight-state region will compete in the Hy-Vee Extreme Cake and Floral Challenge Finals as part of the Iowa Premier Beer, Wine & Food Expo on Saturday.
Earlier this year, more than 130 designers competed in six semifinal events throughout Hy-Vee’s eight-state region in the 2018 Extreme Cake and Floral Challenges. The top cake and floral designers from each semifinal event were then selected to compete in the finals.
Sixteen cake designers will have 4 hours to decorate a three-tiered (or more) wedding cake, as well as a 1st Birthday cake. The entrants are judged on the cakes’ technical appearance, icing appearance and level of difficulty.
Nine floral designers will create four different arrangements in 3 hours, and will be judged on theme, technical execution, focal emphasis, proportion, form, unity, color/texture and originality.
Designers will be judged by a panel of experts, including previous Challenge winners. Winners at the Hy-Vee Extreme Challenge Finals will receive $2,000 for 1st place, $1,000 for 2nd place and $750 for 3rd place. The cake competition will also name a Decorator’s Choice winner who will receive $1,000.
