Shrimp sold at Hy-Vee recalled for undeclared allergen
The product may have contained sulfite, a preservative that can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to the chemical.

WEST DES MOINES, IA – Hy-Vee, Inc. is informing customers in eight states that some shrimp sold through its seafood counters is being recalled due to the presence of an undeclared allergy.

Blessings, Inc. of Tucson, AZ is voluntarily recalling three lots of its domestic 16-20 EZ Peel Shrimp because it contains the allergen sulfite above the levels required for products labeled “sulfite-free.” Sulfite is a preservative approved by the FDA for a variety of foods. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfite run the risk of allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The shrimp subject to the recall was sold through seafood service counters at Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota. It would have been labeled, “16-20 ct EZ Peel Shrimp, Wild Caught, Product of USA,” and sold between February 12 and May 23, 2013. The product in question can be identified by lot numbers 13047-1, 13038-3 and 13037-1, although consumer packages would not carry these lot numbers.

All potentially affected product has been removed from Hy-Vee stores. Customers who may still have some of this product in their freezers at home are asked to return it to the store from which it was purchased for a full refund. Customers with questions regarding the recall or the shrimp they purchased at Hy-Vee are asked to contact the seafood department manager at their local Hy-Vee store.
