Chef Daniel graduated from Kirkwood Culinary school and specializes in Cajun cuisine.
For many years, I have had a great passion for creating different foods, dressings and spices. My interest in cooking began when I was young. I followed my father, who was a chef in the Greek Navy for 16 years, and learned his sense of pairing spices and ingredients together. Throughout the years, I gained experience in the food and beverage industry in various positions in fast food, casual food, and fine dining establishments.
I was provided the opportunity with the Hilton Hotels of Chicago to attend the Culinary Institute of America on a culinary scholarship. After considering my options, my family and I decided to bring Greek cuisine to Cedar Rapids. We opened the Vernon Inn “The Greek Place” Restaurant on my 21st birthday. For 36 years, we greatly enjoyed serving our family’s Greek and American specialties. In addition to the Vernon Inn Restaurant, my entrepreneurial spirit continued while opening the 4th Street Diner, Sweet Basil’s Pizza Pie and Basil’s Foods.
I am enjoying my position as a retail chef with Hy-Vee. Each day provides me with an opportunity to create a variety of foods, sauces, spices and more. I am fortunate to have all the wonderful ingredients I need right at my fingertips to create foods that appeal to a variety of our customers.
