March is designated as National Nutrition Month®.

Each year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics sponsors a nutrition campaign in March.  This year's theme is “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle.”  There are three main components to this year's theme.

The first component is to focus on consuming fewer calories.  I track my meal intake daily using MyFitnessPal.  This helps me stay within my calorie goal and avoid weight gain.  It is also important to choose low-calorie condiments, sides and beverages.  Herbs and spices are good options to jazz up your food without adding calories.  Water of course is a great zero-calorie beverage.  If you are not a fan of plain water, consider infusing with some fresh fruit or vegetables.

The second component is to make informed food choices.  Consider functional foods or superfoods.  These are foods known to offer an extra benefit to eating them.  To learn more about superfoods, attend my free grocery tour on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at 2 p.m.  I will also be featuring a superfood smoothie class on March 19, 2015, at 6:30 p.m.

The final component is to get daily exercise.  The most common reason I hear for people not exercising is that they don't have the time.  Daily exercise can be as simple as doing some pushups during your favorite TV commercial break.

Happy National Nutrition Month®,
