Kids! Plan to attend the 7th Annual Des Moines Hy-Vee Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 17, 2008, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Waterworks Parks in Des Moines.  Kids ages 2-15 can fish free for 10,000 fish. The first 2,000 kids receive a free T-shirt. Those lucky enough to catch one of 2,000 tagged fish receive a prize. There's also a big fish contest! No license required, no admission fee, and bait is available. A limited number of fishing poles are available, so plan to bring you own if you can - and perhaps some lawn chairs. Concession stands are available, and volunteers can help you. Waterworks Park opens at 7:00 a.m. with fishing to start at 8 a.m. The park can be entered from Fleur Drive across from Gray’s Lake or from George Flagg Parkway (the west entrance).

Hy-Vee plans to build a new 80,000-square-foot store in Topeka, Kansas, at SW 29th and Wanamaker Road.

Land that included a former JM Bauersfeld’s building and Stein Mart building was purchased in mid-March 2006. Hy-Vee will submit plans to the city to demolish the two buildings this summer. The store will begin construction in spring or early summer of 2007.

The store will include a pharmacy, food court, dining area, floral department, HealthMarket with natural/organic foods, Hy-Vee Baby department, pet department, one-hour photo processing and a bank branch. There will be an adjacent wine and spirits store.

The store’s delicatessen will include a kitchen serving hot meals, Chinese and Italian food, and a soup and salad bar. A Starbucks Coffee operation may be included.

Scholarships are available to high school seniors and for currently enrolled college students who are Hy-Vee employees or whose parent is a Hy-Vee employee. Please contact your local Hy-Vee store for the free Hy-Vee Upromise card. The numbers from this card should be entered in the "grocery card" section of the Upromise website (www.upromise.com) so that your Upromise-eligible purchases at Hy-Vee can be used for educational savings through the Upromise program. The plastic card has three parts - a larger card and two smaller key ring cards. Any form of payment is accepted under the new Upromise program at Hy-Vee. Some of our stores and Drugstores (formerly Drug Towns) are awaiting computer upgrades to make it possible to account for Upromise-eligible purchases; all stores should be able to participate in the near future. Please remember to present your Hy-Vee Upromise card either before or during checkout as Upromise-eligible purchases cannot be registered once your checkout transaction is completed.
