Dark days of winter got you down? Adding some bright shiny citrus might just cheer you up. Just the scent of a freshly peeled orange or clementine could be enough to lift your spirits, but why stop there? If you’ve got a juicer, make a little sunshine in a glass. Maybe you’re trying to incorporate more salads into your meals. If you make your own salad dressing, try adding some citrus-infused vinegar for extra zip. Work citrus into your main dishes as well. Fish is fabulous with citrus salsa and turkey breast gets an extra boost from citrus sauce.
Citrus’s health benefits can’t be beat either. We all know fruits like oranges, tangerines and grapefruit are loaded with vitamin C which boosts the immune system. Other nutrients found in citrus fruits may help fight colds and flu, decrease inflammation, lower cholesterol and heal wounds. To get the maximum benefit, remember to eat a variety of different citrus.
When buying citrus fruits, look for fruits that are heavy for their size. They’ll be juicier. Store them at cool room temperature or in the fridge.
