The seventh Hy-Vee Triathlon was another sunny success.
Despite some wild weather that delayed the opening horn by 45 minutes, athletes finished under sunny skies and relatively cool temperatures.Sunday's event drew more than 2,500 athletes of all ages and ability from 20 countries.
Some came to compete for cash; others to challenge themselves. They enjoyed near-perfect weather and the hospitality of hundreds of volunteers, who provided everything from refreshment to encouragement.
The event capped a full weekend of swimming, biking and running at Gray's Lake in Des Moines.
It followed Saturday's Hy-Vee IronKids U.S. Championships, where 20 age group national champions were crowned from among 1,500 participants. Medals were handed out to kindergartners and senior citizens alike. They all had two things in common: a huge smile and an invitation to come back for more in 2014.
