It looks like athletes aren’t the only ones who need protein. A new study has found an association between protein consumption and muscle, bone, and fat mass in elderly women. Published online in the journal, Nutrition in Clinical Practice, the study investigated the dietary habits of women older than 65 with sarcopenia (age-related loss of muscle mass) and without sarcopenia. Researchers discovered that women had significantly greater muscle, bone, and fat mass if they consumed more than 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram (2.2. pounds) of bodyweight daily. They also observed that the sarcopenia group had an overall lower intake of essential amino acids. The study highlights the importance of adequate protein intake for women as they age.
