In Response to Stress Reduction Exercises, Breathing for Irregular Heartbeat:
I would love to know what exercises, breathing, yoga would help with stress relief. I have an irregular heartbeat that kicks up when I have the least bit of stress, even GOOD stress. After spending a lot of time and money with cardiac and other physical workups, eliminating caffeine, and other efforts, I would like to find a way to truly relax my whole being.

It is impossible to avoid stress. However, know that it is highly possible to manage it once it has occurred. Learn what helps you relax. Many possible avenues for relaxation exist, and the choices are varied, according to individual preference. For instance, some people are relaxed by taking a hot bubble bath with a magazine, while others need increased physical activity. Try to keep a list of things that make you feel more peaceful, and keep trying things until you find a few that work for you.
Here are some ideas to help get you thinking:
Cooking or baking
Visiting museums or art galleries
Sitting in a café and enjoying the atmosphere
Going for a walk in a park or other scenic place
Having a “spa day” at home or at an actual spa
Journaling or keeping a sketchbook
Writing letters to your loved ones
Taking photos and making a scrapbook
Have you tried visualization? Visualize yourself in a specific situation that worries you, and imagine it going smoothly. Other people find it relaxing to look at a picture of a beautiful landscape and imagine themselves at that locale. If it is a beach scene, for instance, you might imagine the breeze blowing through your hair, the sound of the waves, and the fresh smell of the air.
Utilizing breathing techniques once you feel stress coming on is often helpful in managing stress. Learn to breathe diaphragmatically, also known as “belly breathing,” by placing emphasis on your exhaled breath. Your belly should expand slightly when you inhale, and go down as you exhale. It is best to inhale and exhale through your nose.
Making your physical environment relaxing is also important. Consider these suggestions to help make your physical environment as relaxing as possible:
Change your lighting
Place a small water fountain on your desk or hang one on your office wall
Add a large mirror to a cramped room
Purchase matching baskets and decorative boxes to hold the things that normally clutter your space
Decorate with plants and flowers
Change your color scheme to a more peaceful, earth-based scheme
Starting your morning peacefully, often sets the tone for a low stress day. Set your alarm clock for 20-30 minutes earlier than usual and make sure you go to bed earlier the night before. How you choose to use this extra time is up to you.
Consider these options:
Reading in bed Preparing a nice breakfast for yourself
Taking a relaxing shower
Doing some gentle stretching exercises
Planning your day
