What do you think about items that feature 1 or more servings of fruits and/or vegetables? Do you think there is relevance for Hy-Vee Brand products that include all-natural nutrients from whole food concentrates of fruits and vegetables to help people increase their overall phytonutrient intake? If so, which items do you think have the biggest opportunity for enhanced nutrients?

Thank you for your question.  As a Hy-Vee dietitian, we encourage individuals to get the majority of their fruits and vegetables from fresh or frozen sources as they provide you with vitamins, minerals and fiber to support a healthy and balanced diet.  However, as you discussed, there are products that have been fortified with ingredients not normally found in particular foods, such as the pastas with dried vegetables added or granola bars with fruit blended into the batter.  The vitamin content of these fortified foods may appear to be slightly improved compared to the conventional food, which can be a benefit to the consumer, however the product does not retain 100% of the nutritional benefits of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables.  So, it is still best to choose the fresh or frozen produce varieties to get the majority of your fruit and vegetable needs, while using these fortified products as a means to slightly increase your phytonutrient intake.

Real foods do not need to be enriched, they are good as they are. Avoid enriched foods because they may increase your risk of diabetes, overweight, and heart disease.
