When you experience constipation, it is important to be sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids and getting plenty of fiber in your diet. A general recommendation for fluid intake is about 64 ounces a day. A good recommendation for fiber is to get between 25 and 35 grams per day. I would suggest that you start by making sure that you are meeting these goals. Be sure to increase your fiber intake slowly though. Start by counting the grams of fiber you eat in a normal day. Then increase that amount by 4 or 5 grams every few days until you have reached the goal of 25 to 35 grams per day. Remember that whole grains, fruits and vegetables are all good sources of dietary fiber. There are some fiber supplements available (Metamucil and Benefiber are two examples) that may help you meet your daily goal for fiber intake. If constipation continues to be a problem, it would be a good idea to check with your doctor to explore other causes.
