There are several suppelements that have been studied for their effects on sleep, but they should not be taken without first talking to your doctor to determine the reason that you are having difficulty sleeping.  While not a vitamin or supplement, chamomile tea is often used for its calming effect and may help some people sleep better at night.

I have tried Chamomile tea in the past, but found it to be too mild. It may be a good starting point for you, though, if you have never taken anything to help with sleeping before. In the past, I had a prescription for Lunesta; it worked well... too well... it made me extremely uncomfortable to keep taking it. When the prescription finally ran out, I decided to look for a natural substitute. What I found was Valerian. It is similar to chamomile, but stronger. It is not as pleasant-smelling, either, ha-ha. What I have found with Valerian is: it is effective, does not leave me feeling groggy in the morning, and - surprisingly - I have not developed a tolerance to it (which I tend to do easily); after all this time, I still do not need to increase my evening dosage before bed. I do try to only take it when needed, of course, to keep any chance of acclimation at a minimum.
