In Response to Pre-pregnacy vitamins:
Is it a good idea to start taking vitamins before becoming pregnant? If so, which vitamins are best to take?

Yes, it is a good idea to start taking a prenatal vitamin before becoming pregnant. It is important to get enough folic acid in order to prevent birth defects. Once you become pregnant, you will also need increased amounts of calcium and iron that can sometimes be difficult to get from diet alone. Look for a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 mcg of folic acid. I would suggest asking your doctor or local Hy-Vee dietitian for specific recommendations. Just remember that a supplement is not a substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. You will still need to eat well for a healthy pregnancy.
