Why is Hy-Vee adding salt to fresh chicken?

Post your questions or comments on restricting sodium from your diet here.
I noticed this week that the Hy-Vee boneless, skinless chicken breasts now have been injected with salt solution.  This eliminates a major, formerly-healthy part of my husband's low sodium diet.&

This breaks my heart because chicken is like the staple meat at our house.  I did not realize that.  Does Tyson do it as well?  I guess we will have to read labels more carefully.

Injecting raw chicken with saltwater solutions during processing is a widespread practice in the poultry industry. The process is designed to make naturally lean poultry meat juicier and more tender. Some producers favor this practice while others do not. While chicken prepared in this way is not typically low in sodium, Hy-Vee does offer low sodium chicken breast options. Some of my personal favorites are Smart Chicken and Just BARE brand chicken.

I hope you find this information helpful!

Hi,
I prefer buying freshly cut chickens since I know there is no way they can inject anything to it. I think this is good for you too since you are concerned about the health of your husband.
