My son is a newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic. I bought the Dreamfield pasta and am not sure what I should be counting for his carbs. He is on the ratio for 15 carbs to 1 unit of insulin.
On the box it shows Total carbs at 41 per 1/2 c. dry serving, but then it states in another place Total carbs 41 minus 5 for fiber minus 31 for protected carbs = digestible carbs at 5. Dreamfield says it helps limit the rise in blood sugar levels that normally occur after eating regular pasta.
I am wondering if I calculate by the 41 g of carbs, or by the digestible 5g of carbs. I just don't want to do it wrong and either give him to much insulin or not enough.
I would appreciate any help I could get on this. Thank you.
