Snacks are important for both pre diabetics and diabetics. Snacks help to distribute calories during the day to help the body’s insulin work better and keep blood glucose levels more stable. Be sure to include both carbohydrate and protein in your snacks. Carbohydrates are important sources of energy and incorporating protein into snacks prevents dramatic spikes in your blood sugar levels.

Consistency in your carbohydrate intake is also important. Try to eat the same amount of carbohydrate for meals and snacks at regular times throughout the day. In general,  meals for females should contain 45-60g of carbohydrate and for men, 60-75g. Snacks should generally contain 15g of carbohydrate paired with one serving of protein. That being said, your snack choice of sugar-free jello with mandarin oranges would be a good choice. Just be cautious of your portion size of mandarin oranges, as ½ c contains 19g of carbohydrate.  I would also pair this snack with a protein, such as low-fat string cheese or a handful of almonds.

Additional snack suggestions include:
-4 oz. apple with 1 tablespoon peanut butter
-¾ cup dry ready-to eat cereal, not presweetened, with 2 tablespoons nuts
-1 whole grain bagel thin with melted mozzarella cheese
-12 whole grain crackers with 4 tablespoons hummus

To get more personalized information, or for more snack ideas, you can contact your local Hy-Vee dietitian.

I hope you find this information helpful!

Actually for a diabetic patient it's very important for him to eat something after every two hours because your empty stomach is not good for you, you can be faint because of this so snacks are a good option, because they are light and gives calories to your body.

Nuts are a satisfying and nutritional snack for you at the same time it is a good source of protein and carbohydrates, but only eat a small amount, 6 nuts is enough. Nut butter spread on apple or pear slices or on celery stalks become a good snack.

The guidelines that Laura mentioned above apply to those who are at a healthy weight too.  The key to maintaining good blood sugar control is consistency with carbohydrate intake.  For men, I typically recommend 60 grams of carbohyrdrate at each meal and 15 - 30 grams of carbohydrate at snacks.  This recommendation may need to be adjusted based on weight, hunger level and blood sugar response, so it is very important to work with a dietitian or diabetes educator that can help you set specific goals.  Be sure to have 3 meals each day and try to space them evenly throughout the day and stick to a consistent schedule.  And aim for 30 minutes to one hour of exercise most days of the week.  I often tell customers that what is often referred to as a diabetic diet is really just a healthy eating plan that we should all follow.
