Is bacon worse than butter? They are both animal fats. Thanks for giving us the information to resolve our "discussion."

Well bacon and butter are two different products, but let's look at the nutritional differences between them anyways.

1 tbsp salted butter: 102 calories, <0.5 g protein, 11.5 grams total fat (7 g saturated, 3 g monounsaturated), 31 mg cholesterol, 101 mg sodium.

1 slice pork bacon, cooked, pan-fried: 42 calories, 3 g protein, 3 g total fat (1 g saturated fat, 1.4 g monounsaturated fat), 9 mg cholesterol, 192 mg sodium.

Source: USDA National Nutrition Database for Standard Reference.

As a dietitian, I never tell my clients that they can't have something, but I will explain that there is always an appropriate portion size. Continue enjoying those BLT's, just avoid loading the sandwich with an excessive amount of bacon. There always is the option of buying the lower-sodium bacon at your Hy-Vee as well. Be sure to balance out your meal with a side of fruit and a serving of low-fat dairy.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hi,

I really love bacon especially for breakfast. Sometimes I know I am taking it too much, and feels bad about it. You know what I did? I limit myself from buying it in bulk, just enough for a meal for the whole family. Just sharing my funny experience.
