Eating fish with high cholesterol

My husband was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol.  I always thought fish was a healthy choice so we've started eating much more fish than in the past and rarely red meat.  Someone recently told me, fish isn't so healthy for someone with high cholesterol.  I'm just wondering what the dietician has to say about this.  Thanks for your help!

My husband was recently diagnosed with high triglycerides (sp?) which we are told is a form of high cholesterol.  His doctor specifically told him to eat lots of fish and take a fish pill everyday.  I too am curious as to what suggestions the dietician can make on this topic.

Fish (especially fish with a dark flesh like salmon, tuna or mackerel) is one of the best sources of omega-3 fats which may help lower cholesterol, lower triglycerides and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Omega-3 fatty acids help to prevent blood platelets from clotting together and clogging your arteries. Consuming 1 – 2 servings of fish per week is recommended to provide heart-health benefits.

Most seafood does contain cholesterol. Since a diet high in cholesterol can elevate blood cholesterol, the Dietary Guidelines suggest consuming less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day. However, saturated fat and trans fat in food have a more significant effect on elevating blood cholesterol than dietary cholesterol.

Although one-three ounce serving of shrimp has over 100 milligrams of cholesterol and one 3 oz serving of salmon contains around 72mg of cholesterol, these foods are low in trans fat and saturated fat. This means they can be enjoyed as part of a healthy life style.
