I was recently at my local Hy-Vee and I noticed a sign that was posted by the Hy-Vee nutritionist. It stated that there was no nutritional difference between corn syrup and table sugar. However, I recently read a report form Princeton University (available here) that stated there is evidence that corn syrup contributes to obesity as compared to table sugar. What are your thoughts?

This is certainly a hot topic, but I would have to agree with the nutritionist at your local Hy-Vee.  Corn syrup and table sugar both contain the same number of calories per gram and according to multiple studies, are digested and metabolized similarly in humans.  The University of Maryland conducted a review of the many studies involving corn syrup and concluded that it didn't contribute to overweight or obesity any more than other types of food.  I put a lot more faith in these literature reviews that I do on any single study.  You may be interested in the following link to a blog posting by New York University nutrition expert, Marion Nestle.  She responds to the Princeton study with some questions about its validity.  http://www.foodpolitics.com/2010/03/hfcs-makes-rats-fat/

Why would you ingest either? Both are poisonl. The misinformation out there is amazing.

Hi,

I think either of the two will not be harmful if taken minimally. It is a good idea to minimize the Corn syrup and table sugar in our diet. Absolutely, it’s best to cut out all unnecessary sugars.
