In Response to Fruit & Vegetable Wash?:
I am wondering what you think about using a fruit and vegetable wash on fresh produce. Is it necessary? I have been using "Fit Fruit & Vegetable Wash" for several years and I like it. Recently, I was unable to find Fit at my local grocery store, so I purchased "All Natural Veggie Wash Fruit and Vegetable Wash" and I hate it! It has a very strong smell and instead of being clear like Fit, it is milky white. Even after vigorous rinsing, I can't get rid of the awful minty-chemical smell on my produce and on my hands. Anyway, that got me wondering if it is necessary and recommended to use these types of products or is water enough? Or is there some other homemade solution that works just as well? If you recommend these products, do you have a favorite brand? I will definitely plan on going back to "Fit" if I can manage to get through this awful bottle of the other stuff!

The FDA recommends washing fresh produce with water, not commercial or home-made produce washes. Water alone will remove bacteria as well as reduce the level of pesticides on the produce. For produce with a thick skin, using a vegetable brush will help remove the most microbes. I would say save your money and buy more fruits and vegetables instead!
