Trimming Schedule Guidelines

  • Hydrangea
    Trim in the spring when new growth starts to appear. Trim to the ground.
  • Butterfly Bushes
    Trim in the spring when new growth starts to appear. Trim to the ground.
  • Hardy Hibiscus
    Trim in the spring when new growth starts to appear. Trim to the ground.
  • Hardy Mums
    Trim in the spring when new growth starts to appear. Trim off old growth.
  • Ornamental Grasses
    Trim in the spring when new growth starts to appear. Leave 8 to 10 inches of old growth
  • Lilacs
    Trim back one-third 7-14 days after they bloom (usually late May-early June)
  • Hardwood Trees (Oak)
    Trim in January or February when dormant. Remove all dead wood. If you wish to remove more, only take out branches that are touching one another.
  • All Roses
    Trim in April and prune to the green on the cane (halfway back)
  • Clematis
    Trim all dead vines after new growth appears in the spring
