Steps To Fertilize Lawn

Q: I’ve heard not to fertilize a lawn too often. When do you begin and what type or brand of fertilizer do you use? Carl – Urbandale

A: I have to go with Hy-Vee four- and five-step. First is crabgrass preventer. It has iron and sulfur. Step two in May is weed-and-feed and no rain behind this one for 24-48 hours. In June you want insect control. Then comes lawn food in July. September 1st is the winterizer. Don’t forget grub control before July 1st and water it in.
