Pruning Rose Bushes

Q: I have an out-of-control burning bush that I want to cut back severely. It is 14 feet high and too close to my house. If I cut it back to 3 feet high, would that be too much? If not, what height should I expect next year? Scott – Des Moines

A: When you buy a plant, make sure you give it plenty of space. You have a standard burning bush. Even on a 17-degree day, get out the big lopper or even a hand saw. Prune it halfway back. If it’s 14 feet, take it down to 7 feet. We’ll also recommend fertilizing around the first of May when the plant is taking in fertilizer during the growing season.
