Hy-Vee and Alaska Seafood

When Chuck Bundrant landed his first job as a deckhand in the ’60s, he had no idea life at sea would lead him to revolutionize crab fishing in Alaska. Working as a king crabber, Bundrant grew frustrated that boats had to stop crabbing when they were full and leave the best fishing grounds to unload their catch for a buyer. He had also worked in processing plants, so he developed a plan to allow both harvesting and processing to happen at sea. Bundrant’s dream gave life to a new company, Trident Seafoods, and a new vessel, the Billikin—the first modern catcher-processor capable of harvesting, processing and freezing crab on board. Forty years later, the 135-foot Billikin remains the flagship of Trident’s fleet, and continues to brave the Bering Sea to bring the best Alaskan crab from the sea to your local Hy-Vee.
